Frequently Asked Questions about Notepad
Is Notepad really free?
Yes. Using our free online notepad requires no subscription, credit card, or account creation. You open the homepage, click on « New Note, » and start writing.
All the features presented on the site are accessible: formatting, task lists, tables, templates, search, themes, export, and saving. You can read the usage rules in our terms of service .
Where are my grades saved?
Your notes are saved in your browser’s local storage on the device you are using. They are not sent to our servers: we cannot read or retrieve them.
A practical consequence of this is that a note created on your computer will not automatically appear on your phone, and each browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.) has its own storage space. For details, see our privacy policy or return to the note editor .
Can I use Notepad offline?
Notepad requires an internet connection to load the page . Once the page is open, writing and saving in your browser does not require sending your notes over the internet: if your connection drops, you can usually continue writing as long as the page remains open.
We cannot yet promise a fully offline mode (site reopening without an internet connection). Sharing and, depending on your browser, voice dictation require an internet connection.
Can I export my notes?
Yes, in several ways, from the « Download » button at the bottom of the editor:
- Text file (.txt) : plain text, compatible with everything.
- Word file (.doc) : opens in Word and common word processors.
- Web page (.html) : preserves formatting.
- PDF : via “Print / Save as PDF”.
To save all your notes at once, use « Save » (JSON file). You can also copy the text using the « Copy » button. Find these tools on the Notepad homepage .
How does the trash can work?
When you delete a note, it is moved to the trash ; it is not erased. Open the « Trash » tab to view it, then click ↩ to restore it.
Permanent deletion (✕) requires confirmation, as it is irreversible. The trash is not emptied automatically, but remains in your browser’s storage: therefore, it is also affected by data loss if you empty your browser.
Does Notepad work on mobile?
Yes. The interface adapts to phones and tablets: your notes list opens in a drawer with the ☰ button, and the toolbar scrolls horizontally. Simply open blocnote.online in your phone’s browser.
Remember that notes written on mobile remain on that mobile unless you transfer them with a backup (see below).
Are my grades numerical?
To be clear: notes are saved without specific encryption in your browser’s local storage. They are protected by your device’s session, but anyone or any extension with access to your browser can potentially read them. However, the connection to the site is secure (HTTPS) and your notes are not transmitted to our servers.
Our advice: do not use Notepad for passwords, bank codes, or highly sensitive data. Learn more in our privacy policy .
Does voice dictation send my voice anywhere?
Dictation (the 🎙 button) uses your browser’s built-in speech recognition , not a Notepad service. Depending on the browser, the audio may be processed by its editor (for example, in Chrome). We do not receive your voice or the transcription.
It is configured in French and works primarily on Chrome and Edge. If your browser does not support it, a message will inform you. To avoid any voice processing by a third party, do not use this feature: the rest of the editor functions normally.
What happens when I click on « Share »?
Nothing is sent until you click. When you choose a service (WhatsApp, Telegram, X, Reddit, email, etc.), the note text is sent to that service in a new window, possibly with a link to Notepad if the « Include link to this page » box is checked.
For Facebook and LinkedIn, the text is first copied to your clipboard: simply paste it into your post. The « Copy text » button does not share anything online. The selected services apply their own privacy policies.
How do I transfer my notes to another device?
- On the original device, open the home page and click on « Save » : a JSON file is downloaded.
- Send yourself this file (email, messaging, USB drive, cloud).
- On the new device, open Notepad and click « Restore » , then choose the file.
Imported notes are added to those already present: if you restore to the same device, you may end up with duplicates. For a single note, you can also use « Copy » or « Download ».
How do I report a problem or request a feature?
